Bagnols, A charming village
bagnols-en-foretA stay in Bagnols offers the pleasures both of the sea and the countryside. This quiet village, perched 300 metres up in the foot-hills of the Esterel, has a population of just under 2,000 ; it is the first village you pass through on the departmental road D4 which takes you from the Mediterranean at Fréjus up into the region of Fayence. Bagnols is cooled in summer by e sea breeze that gently blows over le Pic de la Gardiette, to refresh you as you sit at one of the terraced restaurants, where you will find a warm welcome, in the shade of age-old plane trees in the market square or under a spreading chestnut tree next to the church.

A past still present

Bagnols-meules2 bagnols-en-foret_moulin-steBagnols and its surrounds, bounded by a series of natural limits, has been occupied since prehistoric times : Oppidum de la Forteresse, de Castel Diaou. In the firs century B.C. the romans battled with the Gallic tribes and around 45 A.D. Caesar founded Forum Julii, our Fréjus, and during his time the Romans were welle able to take advantage of what the small depression had to offer –this little hollow of land lying near the coast but comfortably removed from the unhealthy swamps and bogs. They grew crops, raised stock, developed the forest, built “villae” – clusters of dwelling- andmade use of the hot springs, building baths fed by the many rivers, streams and pure springs, which activity probably gave Bagnols its name – Balneolis. At that time there was evidently an important demographic growth in Bagnols, when the natives lived under the influence of the Romans.
Then followed a long troubled time of invasion by barbarians (Visigoths, ostrogoths) then in 536 the Franks occupied the entire country. While theses wars raged, making life unpredictqble and violent, the people took refuge in the higher lands of Bayonne and built stone walls for terraces, turning the slopes into land usable for farming to continue.

bagnols-en-foret_pont-neuf Bagnols-en-foret_egliseBetween the 6 th and 10 th centuries the recorded history of Provence is sparse, mainly because the archives were destroyed during the invasion by Moors and Barbarians ; not till the 11 th century do we begin again to see the name Castrum Bagnols reappearing. From the point of view of the people and their social history there is e clear connection between those people who lived on the Gallo-Roman estates and their continuity into le Castrum Médiéval. In fact the site of the present village dates from the Middle Age. The awners of the large estates or domains became the lords and overlords, pressured by their serfs and farmworkers who demandes help and protection. This was how feudalism was born in our rural areas. In 144 the Bishop became lord of the combined estates in this region. At the end of the 14 th century and beginning of the 15 th brigands pillaged and sacked their way through the country, Bagnols became entirely depopulated and life in the village stopped for 85 yeears.
In 1470 King René arrived in Provence and there were signs of recovery in the country, economic conditions improved with the coming of a period of peace. It took another 7 years for the Bishop of Fréjus, Urbano di Flisco, created by the Pope and still living in Roma, to send his brother Hector to make a tour of his diocese. Given the attractions of the area the Bishop provided means whereby the village courd re-establish itself, encouraging families from Pieve di Teco (district of Albenga- Italia) – to come to Bagnols by giving them parcels of land to develop.

To discover

Saint-Denis Chapel
As we see it today, the chapel was built in the XI th century on the remains of a Gallo-Roman villa, which had been occupied from the Ist to the IV th century.

Chapel of « Our Lady of Sorrows »Archaeological excavations carried in 1982 have proved that the Chapel, situated on the plain of Bagnols-en-Forêt (Route de Draguignan D47) was constructed on the remains of a Gallo- Roman villa which had been built at the beginning of the First Century A.D.

Saint-Anne’s Chapel
It was a Spaniard : Jean Vigneron, who built this chapel in 1654, in order to thank the king Louis XIVth who had granted him letters patent which gave him French nationality.
He dedicated the chapel to Saint-Anne, the mother of the Virgin Mary to whom he was very devoted. He also paid for the altar and the ornaments, together with the vessels used in worship.

Saint Antony’s Chapel
Situated on the « Boulevard du Rayol »
This Chapel dedicated to St-Antony the hermit, already existed in 1660, having been built on the foundations of an older building. According to old records this aera was called « The Spa » and would have had 7 springs in the surrounding area which are still used today for watering by local inhabitants.

The Parochial Church of St-Antonin
The Parochial Church was built on the present site in 1707. Prior to that date the Church stood where we see to-day’s Town Hall (Mairie).

Walks

bagnols-en-foret_le-blavetThe Gorges of the Blavet River :
The volcanic range of hills known as the “Massif de l’Esterel” stretches westwards along the coast from Cannes to Saint-Raphael. Bagnols is in between this range of hills and another range “Massif des Maures” which stretches from Saint Aygulf to the East to Saint Tropez to the West. The volcanic range known as the Esterel is full of peaks, ravines and gorges which give much interest to any walk in the area. The magic of the rock formation and never-ending changes in the colour of the hills accentuate some of the most beautiful scenery in the world.
Come and admire the dawn light on the hills of the red porphyry, - red as fire, - rising from the forest green and standing out against the azure blue of the sea !
