Callian

A village with a rich architectural and historical heritage
callian-chateau-guoergThe streets of the village, laid out in a circle around the feudal castle, are lined with old houses, some hundreds of years old.

Once an important burg, its territory extended all the way to the coast. From the highest point in town, you’ll find an arresting view of the horizon. With the Tanneron and Estérel Massifs rising above, the sea glistens in the sun. The surrounding hills are covered with a thick forest composed largely of oaks and conifers, where you can fully enjoy the blend of fragrances from all the vegetation. This panorama reveals all the beauty and diversity of this exceptional land.

The heritage of the past...
callian-chateau-terradeMany historical relics confirm the ancient history of Callian:  a Roman cippus on the front steps of the town hall, a sarcophagus and door head bearing Latin inscriptions.

The feudal castle is one of the most beautiful monuments in the town. It stands above the village. Built upon a rocky peak with corner towers from the 12th and 13th centuries, it belonged to the noble families of the region. It was completed in the 15th century and largely restored to its original state by the current owner. Although it is private, the guard towers are open for visits during Heritage Days.

A very attractive village...
callian-cascadecallian-ruelle-2Honoré Bourguignon square, with its cooling waterfall, is in the centre of the old village. You can also see an olive oil mill dating from 1815 (open only in season), and some remains of the Roman aqueduct that provided the town of Fréjus with water flowing from Mons. A quality environment and healthful climate make a very pleasant village.

… Which has attracted numerous notable people
Many notable people have found Callian to be a favourable place to exercise their art. For example, painters Fernand et Nadia Leger, the famous designer Christian Dior, (Nadia Leger and Christian Dior are both buried in Callian), Anthony Burgess, author of the book “A Clockwork Orange”, world-famous painter Edouard Goerg, Mme Juliette Adam, a woman of letters who died at age 100 at Camiole castle.
