Fayence

Fayence, a hilltop village with a rich heritage...
fayence-villagePerched on top of a rich heritage, the village of Fayence, the administrative seat of the canton of the same name, is one of the "hilltop villages" typical of this lovely region known as the Pays de Fayence. Get out there and discover the beautiful cultural heritage concealed in the village (the clock tower with its splendid panorama, Porte Sarrasine, remnants of a watchtower, fountains, wash-houses, etc.) through a walking tour put together by the tourist office called “Au Fil des Ruelles” (“Through the Streets and Alleyways”).

A page of history
fayence-endronneLong ago, Fayence was built on the plain around the chapel of Notre-Dame-des-Cyprès. The Romans called it “Faventia”, meaning “pleasant places”. The inhabitants later moved up on the neighbouring hillsides, which were easier to defend, and built the current town

Fayence is famous for its fortifications, though now there are only remnants and a few portals (especially Porte Sarrasine, listed on the French Inventory of Historic Monuments). They surround the village and the ruins still bestow a somewhat feudal air -- it's hard not to feel the sense of nobility they emit. Learn more
